Daring Monday: Go For a Daring Adventure
I love a good coincidence. I believe that the universe is, oh say, about 8 billion times bigger and fuller than we can possibly comprehend. I also happen to believe that there is something even bigger than us, and the entire universe, out there that is the source of all this 8 billion-plus-ness. It is my personal philosophy that, based on my experience, as unlikely as it seems this Source (God is the most often used term, but the choice of titles is astounding, I’ve come to prefer The Limitless Divine for it’s clarity and simplicity) is intimately involved in our lives.
Still, even those of us who believe this and make every effort to live with this in mind can occassionally forget about deeper meaning and bigger things and need a gentle prod as reminder or encouragement. Coincidences, in my mind, are this prod (Jung called them synchronicities); they are the Limitless Divine winking at us.
So, on New Year’s Eve, when I had spent the last few weeks pondering my intentional word for the next year and kept coming back to the word Dare (over and over again) I was not the least bit surprised (although, I will admit to be hugely excited) to get the following fortune cookie with our celebratory dinner.

Not only did this coincidence tell me that I was on the right track, that 2010 needed to be my year for Daring, it also reminded me that being brave isn’t only synonymous with being scary, it’s also a guaranteed lead to an adventure.
Following my logical mind has never taking me in the direction of adventure. Let’s be honest here, our ego (and left/logical brain) has only one objective: self-preservation. This is it’s one and only drive; everything it does is calculated based on it’s own scale of what will or will not extend our lives based on it’s experience and evaluation of the world around us.
While there is a lot to be said for self-preservation (and our need for it) – dead is an adventure most of us plan to hold off on – the system our ego’s use to weigh decisions is not usually one that is based in the true reality of the world. Neither does it often include considerations for things like joy, happiness, or adventure. If we want to live with a little something more happening in our worlds, we need to learn to listen to a different voice.
We need to learn to hear the fortune cookie!
We need to follow the synchronicities; we need to go with our instincts (aka your intuition), and unquestioningly go where our feelings lead us. This week, let your Spirit (and your Right/Idea Brain) take you on a daring adventure. This might be a little difficult for some of us, so here’s my “Simple Steps to Daring Adventure” guide.
1. Decide if you are looking for daring guidance on some particular subject, or willing to take the dare wherever it leads you. If the first, then make a blog post, journal entry, or just take a moment to consult with the Limitless, laying out the issue at hand and what your desired goal is.
2. Ask the Limitless/God/Universe/Higher Self (etc…) to lead the way this week. Invite them/it/he/she/yourself to create coincidences, offer signs, or just plain old tap you on the shoulder throughout the week. Promise to do your best to obey when you hear.
3. Determine (you might want to occasionally remind yourself) that you are going to keep your eyes and ears open for possible Right-Brained guidance.
4. When you see something that stands out, that might be a sign, feel or hear a prompting to act (do or say something) do it. Even if it feels stupid, silly, or just plain wrong. The worst that can happen is that you took a right when you didn’t really need to… Don’t waste time debating with your Logical Mind whether this is really the guidepost you’ve been waiting for.
5. Have fun!
6. Seeing as #4 isn’t as easy as it sounds, if you are serious about having the Daring Adventure this week then I advise that when you don’t take the action indicated and realize it was after all a God Wink (of one kind or another) the best thing to do is acknowledge it. That way it will be that much easier to hear it next time. (Yes, if you see me out in public talking to No One about how they were right, and they did tell me after all, I’m probably acknowledging my lack of follow up on an intuitive nudge. Don’t mind me, I’m only eccentric after all.)

I'm even on the cover - no not her down there near the bottom; that's me there.

Awesome fortune cookie story. I have a good one too, but it’s dirty.
This topic is one I’ve been working with a lot in my life and the interesting thing to me is that it is a not a gift to receive guidance…it’s a skill. Looking at your points there, each has action. Decide…Ask…Determine…Do…Have fun. It’s not something that you either have or don’t. It’s something you work at.
I don’t think I even want to KNOW how a fortune cookie can give you a dirty fortune!
Yes! Most people believe that intuition (and therefore being psychic) is a gift you either have or don’t have – this is NOT true. It is true that some people are just born more in tune with it, that it comes naturally to them. But we ALL have intuition, we are all psychic. It’s just that it’s trained out of us in our current society. Some people are born “naturals” at drawing, but all kids can draw. It’s not until people start evaluating, relating, comparing and discouraging us that we believe WE can’t draw and THEY can. Intuition is just like that. It’s an innate part of your being that you can learn to get in touch with again…
Learning to draw means: studying things, paying attention, and most of all drawing. Learning to be intuitive again means: paying attention, honouring your inner self, and following the prompts. The more you do it the better you get. (You can email me if you have specific questions you’ve been working on btw… or maybe I should make a post
).

fortune cookies can be dirty a lot of the time if you add “in bed” to the end of them…for instance: “get ready to do something daring…in bed”
Caroline Myss (know her stuff? She’s pretty awesome?) talks about intuition being a result of self-esteem, and that makes a lot of sense to me. It takes a lot of self-esteem to trust yourself, especially when you are being compared, judged, discouraged, etc. I love your analogy to drawing…it really helps make bring this “mystical, out there” thing down to a more practical level. Especially the last part “…and most of all drawing.” You can learn all you want, but without application/practice, you don’t learn it with your whole self. That action really makes a skill settle into who we are and become an extension of who we are…not just something we do.
For me, I’ve always liked the analogy of playing guitar. Initially it takes a lot of concentration just to play a song on the guitar without it sounding like crap. You mentally know how to play the chords and what the strumming pattern is, etc. But your body hasn’t learned to do it yet. Through repetition and paying attention to what you’re doing right and what you’re doing wrong, you adjust and your body learns to play it to the point that you don’t have to focus on it anymore…it’s natural.
If you try to sing along with the song during that first stage, you will fail. You can’t sing while playing guitar until you don’t have to focus on it anymore. Takes practice over knowledge.
I’ve heard that Carolyn Myss says that, and I agree, you need the self-confidence just in yourself, because if you don’t trust yourself it’ll never work.
Here’s the thing: your intuition is just another voice in your head, you need to learn to differentiate the voices (ego’s voice, from “God’s voice” etc.) and recognize when it’s You (what you want etc…) and your Spirit (your intuition) prompting you. Seeing as we are on an analogy binge I like the telephone. If I called you up right now I’d have to tell you who I was… yet, if I called you regularly eventually you’d know me just by my greeting. Intuition is like that. You’ve been ignoring/blocking it out for so long you don’t recognize your own Spirit’s voice. The more you acknowledge it, the better you become at recognizing and differentiating it. Your intuition is talking to you ALL the time. Our culture prefers to call it our instinct or our conscience – but that’s all your Spirit.
Haven’t you ever thought: I knew that! I knew I shouldn’t have taken this way. I knew that was going to be you on the phone. I knew something was wrong (or right)… The thing is, because of our stereotypes of psychics and being psychic we expect to know big important things. I tell you, my intuition is loudest when I drive. Unimportant things like don’t speed up (and then the guy in front of me slams on his brakes unexpectedly), or take this left (when I normally take the next one) – find out the next one has construction.
Interesting thought just came to me… Your intuition (Spirit’s) goal is to bring you happiness, to give you the life you are trying to create. So, intuition is actually a tool of the Law of Attraction. It guides you to create the world that you are focused on – positive or negative. I ask a question, of myself, God, nobody in particular, if you wait long enough and keep yourself open your intuition will almost always answer!

Megan
Megan, you’re so in touch with this stuff, I love it. I think you’re absolutely right on about all that. Our intuition is our instinct…is our spirit. I like that. We usually (or maybe always) know what to do, from simple things like what to wear that day to big things like how to start accomplishing our big life goals. Those thoughts come so quickly we don’t always recognize them as thoughts or intuition. We dismiss it or question it with secondary thought processes that are based on doubts and insecurities. Those we recognize as our actual thoughts on the subject. If someone asked us what we think about it we would tell them our secondary doubt-ridden thoughts instead of those first instinctual ones. Did I say that clearly?
Your 6 steps above are a really good guide for getting in touch with your intuition. I would love for you to write more on this. Maybe as a guest post for me, wink wink.
Hi Megan (and Carlos – thanks for tweeting this. It feels like an invitation to join a brilliant conversation)
I don’t believe in coincidences at all. I’ve always called them God-incidences but I love your phrase God wink so much more. I can’t even begin to try and select one short God wink to share with you because there’s been so many they would fill a small book.
I’ve also been the one having to acknowledge that the not gone with opportunity was in fact a God wink I should have grabbed so as you can imagine, this post spoke volumes to me.
I’m wrestling with a particular demon this week so will definitely accept your challenge. Today is a good day. You know how you feel the day after two very low, struggling type days? When you have that sense of hope and belief that the corner has been turned? Today is that day
Wonderful post Megan. I need to add your feed to my email so I don’t miss future offerings. I could have done with reading this on Monday
