Limitless Living: One brilliant life-lover's guide to creating your brilliant life

What You Should Be Reading: On Women & Menstruation, etc.

A Post in Progress: As you can see, this post isn’t anywhere near done, but I have decided that instead of holding it in my draft folder until it is more complete I’m going to put it out there live now. This is your chance, email, or comment, with your suggestions of books, products, websites, or even categories. I’ll be back to add mine in slowly over the next 2-3 days and I’ll start adding yours in right away too.

Tess’ comment on my lost post got me to thinking, if we were going to round out this conversation about learning to be/embrace being a woman (see this post and then this one) then the perfect ending to the theme would be resources.

I’ll start with what I have/know, but if you add your suggestions to the comments I’ll be sure to add your suggestions to the lists – maybe we’ll end up with a full-on, unbeatable resource list for Moms, Feminists, and Women in general!

Periods, Menstruation, & Women’s Cycles

The Wise Wound
Although I have heard of it (it’s referenced in the below book) I haven’t read it yet myself. But, Tess says it was a life-changing read, and that means it’s got to be worth looking at. By Penelope Shuttle and Peter Redgrove

Women’s Rites of Passage: Reconnecting to the Source of Feminine PowerThis is a full workbook that mixes teaching with lots of space for recording your own stories and working through your ideas and thoughts. By: Hemitra Crecraft

Flow
I am eagerly awaiting this one’s arrival in the mail. It’s an actual look at how menstruation got to be so taboo in the first place – it looks totally worth it just for all the old feminine hygiene ads! You can read a review of it at Book Lady’s Blog. By: Elissa Stein & Susan Kim

Products You Need to Be Brave Enough to Check Out:

Sea Pearl from Jade & Pearl a reusable internal system. My all time favourite, 10 out of 10 stars!
Diva Cup (Just one among many name brand menstrual cups.) I haven’t tried this one, but I sold tons of them and my customers gave me their feedback. What I know is: bad idea for women with a tipped uterus (try the above product instead), takes 2-3 cycles to get used to it (so use pads with it the first little bit), but once you’ve got the hang of it you’ll never stop using it. Also, the nice ladies from Luna Pads made a great video on using them which you can see here.
Luna Pads Fabulous alternative for light days (I have their pantiliners) or women who don’t like the internal systems. Plus, this company is AMAZING, definitely take some time to check them out. Love them; lots and lots of love to them. For you American ladies, you’ll find that Jade & Pearl carries the Luna Pad line and another brand of menstrual cup.

One of my absolute favorite stories involves my friend as a teenager in the grocery store with her mother. They were loading the groceries on the checkout belt and her mother found her sort of tucking the tampons in between two items, obviously trying to conceal them. She pushed her aside, grabbed the box of tampons and set them boldly on the top the pile. She said, “Never be ashamed of buying tampons. You should be proud that you’re a woman.” I think that is one of the most excellent friend/mother stories I’ve heard.

That IS a fabulous story! I wish I had her mother… I actually talked to my mom this weekend about it and neither of us remember my first period or her ever talking to me about it. She said she was sorry about that because that’s what had happened to her and she hadn’t wanted to repeat the pattern – hadn’t meant to anyway. I was ashamed of buying products until I was in my 30s and used to be scared if a guy was at the cash :O !

Megan

I don’t have any wisdom to add, re: books, but I just wanted to add that O.B. Tampons are the best, best, best product. That’s all.

Roxanne,

I’m not really a big fan of tampons – toxic shock and bleach etc… – but of all of them OB would be the best I think.

Megan
